Two Firmac employees will be taking part in a 200 miles bike ride, along with the Mayor of Scarborough.

Andy Smith, Director of Firmac Engineering Services and John Bennett a fabricator at Firmac will be accompanying the Mayor and Mayoress of Scarborough on their 200 mile bike ride “Ride the BoS – conquer the elements”.

Named ‘Ride The BoS - conquer the elements’ the initiative was inspired and developed by the Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Scarborough, councillors Andrew and Sue Backhouse.

A new cycle ride has been launched to encourage people to get fit whilst taking in all the sights the borough has to offer. The road base route involves 14,000ft of climbing, 200 miles and 94 towns, villages and hamlets.

The inaugural ‘Ride The BoS (which stands for Borough of Scarborough) – conquer the elements ‘will take place over four days from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 May and will involve the Mayor and Mayoress and a team of up to 40 riders from organisations based within the borough tackling steep moorland climbs and brake testing descents while enjoying the sights of picture postcard villages and vibrant seaside towns.

Mr Backhouse said: “This is a culmination of months of hard work by a small dedicated team to develop a route that will enable us to fulfil our ambition of visiting every community in the borough.

While the diversity of our borough’s landscape is what makes it so wonderful, it also means that parts of the route are very challenging and we don’t mind admitting that we’ve had to step up our training regime.”

The Mayor and Mayoress are determined to leave a lasting legacy and plans are already underway for the ride to become an established route for future generations to enjoy, whether in the form of a two day sportive event for road cycling enthusiasts and professionals, or for individuals or families to cycle small parts of the route whenever they want.

The potential for a lasting legacy has already been formally recognised by the organisers of the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014 Legacy initiative, allowing the initiative’s branding to be used to support the ride.

Anyone interested in getting involved should be a regular cyclist with a good level of fitness, strength and endurance. To sign up, email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
