Following quickly on the heels of the recent “Business of the Year 2015” success at the Chamber Bridlington and Yorkshire Coast Business Awards (CBYCBA) ceremony, Firmac has won the Scarborough News Business Awards 2015 “Export Achievement of the Year”.

Fighting off stiff competition, the Scarborough based firm which designs and manufacturers duct forming machinery for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) market, impressed the judges with their record of exports to Europe, the Middle East and Russia.

Lewis Firth, Managing Director comments, “We are very pleased to have been presented with this award. Firmac has a strong export record and Firmac machines are working hard for customers across the world. We pride ourselves on producing high quality machinery, which is durable and reliable. In a market where machines from the Far East have been flooding the market, Firmac has held a strong position by innovating and producing machinery, which is faster and more accurate than the Chinese Far East competition. Customers see increased productivity and better return on their investment.”

Firmac is the only ductwork machinery manufacturer that designs and manufactures entirely in the UK.

Scarborough Engineering Week 2015

Firmac has recently spent three days at the Spa, Scarborough, 13-15 September talking to primary and secondary school children about the role of an engineer at the company. Along with many other local engineering businesses, Firmac was supporting an annual event aimed at promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects to local schools.

Scarborough Engineering Week, now in its 6th year welcomed thousands of students to the show.

Firmac apprentices were present for the whole event to talk to both students and parents about apprenticeships and the type of roles available at Firmac for school leavers. Firmac supports Engineering Week as part of an ongoing programme to promote engineering to students in the local area.

Firmac has won the Best Medium/ Large Business Award and the Business of the Year Award 2015 at the Chamber Bridlington and Yorkshire Coast Business Awards. The winners were announced at a gala dinner hosted by the Chamber on October 16th at the Bridlington Spa.

Firmac along with Detectamet Ltd and Shepcote Distributors Ltd were selected from 15 entries from across the region to compete for the Best Medium/Large Business award.

Simon Morrell, General Manager, along with colleague Alan Waites, accepted the award on behalf of Firmac. “We were absolutely thrilled to have been awarded the best Medium/Large Business Award, and then to be awarded the overall Business of the Year 2015 was just fantastic,” comments Simon. “Everyone back at the factory is over the moon. It’s a great recognition of the engineering skills we have in the business – most of whom have been apprentice trained with us. Credit should be given to the team’s hard work and dedication to continually strive to improve and innovate to ensure the business stays ahead of our highly competitive international market.”

Firmac is a Scarborough based company and is the only business to wholly design and build metal duct forming equipment in the UK. Over 95% of the machinery is exported to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The judges were impressed with how this local business has carved a place in the global marketplace for HVAC and commented “Firmac show how a family engineering business can innovate to protect themselves against changing market conditions and demonstrate that British engineering can still be world class”.

The citation for the Business of the Year stated that Firmac was “A superb example of how a company can diversify from a traditional metal working business into a specialist area that allows them to compete internationally.”

Firmac is once again supporting Scarborough Engineering Week which will be held at the Spa, 13-15 September. The event, now in its 6th year aims to inspire school children in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. Simon Morrell, General Manager explains why the event is an important date in the local business calendar.  "There are many organisations in Scarborough and the surrounding area that rely heavily on engineers, and like the rest of the country, we are facing a severe skills shortage in this area. We are keen to encourage the next generation to consider a career in engineering in particular. Our apprentices spend 3 days at the event talking to the children, parents and teachers about what an engineering apprenticeship at Firmac is like."

Scarborough Engineering Week runs from 13-15 October.  The event is open to the public on 13th October 4.30-7pm.

Firmac will once again be exhibiting at the Big 5 International Building and Construction Show in Dubai, 23-26 November 2015.Visitors are encouraged to come and hear about the latest developments in HVAC duct forming machinery from the Firmac team.  Director, Lewis Firth explains why Firmac will be exhibiting again this year. “We are expecting a good attendance at the show, particularly as Dubai has been awarded Expo 2020.  We find that our Drive Cleat Duct Line is especially popular in this market thanks to its production capabilities; speed of manufacture and ability to produce low cost flanging systems. Also STR-750, Square to Round Duct Former attracts a lot of interest as it is still relatively new to the market and can produce square to round transitions in a fraction of the speed traditionally taken on a folding machine”

This popular show will be located in the International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Dubai World Trade Centre.
