Swedish students at Firmac

17 Swedish sixth formers visited local engineering business Firmac and then Scarborough UTC as part of their educational visit to Scarborough on 29th May. The students, from Vilhelm Moberg Sixth Form College in Sweden, are all taking courses in either business, technology or engineering.

Anna Horling, teacher at Vilhelm Moberg Sixth Form College and trip organiser, explains why the visit to local business is important. “The college brings students to Scarborough every year as part of their last compulsory English course. This gives them experience of communicating in English whilst learning about English culture and everyday life in the UK. We are always thrilled that Firmac welcomes us to their factory. It’s great for the students to see a successful British manufacturing company, exporting all over the world, including Sweden”.

Lewis Firth, Director at Firmac, commented. “This is the third year that we have hosted a visit from Vilhelm Moberg Sixth Form College. 85% of our business is exported worldwide and we work with businesses and partners across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We believe it’s important to encourage and promote British engineering wherever we can, and this is one such opportunity.”

The visit to the town also gave the students the opportunity to see Scarborough UTC, where students combine traditional GCSE and A-Level studies with technical qualifications in engineering and cyber security. Lee Kilgour, the College Principal said, “Our UTC continues to learn from international education providers, such as our Swedish guests and our partnership with the Austrian HTBLVA Ferlac, and it is fantastic to welcome the students from Vilhelm Moberg here today, to show them our amazing facilities.”

Anna concludes, “This visit provided a great opportunity for our technology students to learn about Scarborough’s UTC. In Sweden, like the UK, there is a shortage of engineers and as educators we are looking at ways to address this. It’s very interesting for our students to see how their British peers are being trained and educated to fill this gap.”
